A Madness Most Discreet
|
I don't like this one. I really really don't like it. The title of the episode comes from Shakespeare's quote:
Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs,
Being purged, a fire sparkling in lover's eyes
Being vexed, a sea nourished with lover's tears.
What is it else? A madness most discreet,
A choking gall and a preserving sweet.
We start with Spenser gazing longingly at a ballerina. The first time I saw this I thought maybe Susan was taking up ballet - who else could Spenser be looking at like that? But no, it's a stranger, a woman he'd never met. But he is instantly obsessed with her. And then he KISSES HER. And he doesn't tell Susan! Sure he didn't sleep with her. That's supposed to make up for it??
I think this is the first time we see Spenser in glasses. They become more common as we go on.
I do love Hawk's line that he is "discouraging yoru impetuosity". On the down side, they call Quincy Market "Quinzy Market". Wrong pronunciation.
You get scenes of the Ritz Carlton. You get Spenser telling the ballerina to run to the "green car" - I always thought his Mustang was black! I guess it must be super-dark-green. Spenser doesn't seem to know how to pronounce Debussy. I do love at the Museum of Fine Arts that they walk by one of my favorite paintings there, by John Singer Sargent, of Mrs. Fiske Warren with daughter Rachel.
But it's all ruined by Spenser's actions.
