Widow's Walk
Robert B. Parker
Published 2002
Spenser's back in Boston, dealing with old-money and Boston blue bloods. An older husband was apparently killed by his ditsy younger blonde wife, and Spenser's hired by Rita Fiore to clear the wife. Or at least to find out what really happened. A lot of the story revolves around the gay community, but strangely Farrel doesn't show up. Instead, Spenser goes to a new friend to get the scoop. The ending on this one is fairly satisfying.
Lisa Says: I love the way Robert B Parker writes, but sometimes it gets a little too sparse. The entire first chapter is done in the style of

It gets a little silly :) Parker assumes you already know the characters so he only barely sketches them. The 'heroine' is a completely ditsy blonde that can't put two words together. It's a little melodramatic too, with Susan losing a patient and Spenser failing to protect someone that comes to him for help. Plus he fights off a ton of attackers, one after another. The cops seem more distant and grumpier with him for being involved. Maybe Parker was scolded for Spenser just blasting up the neighborhood in the past? And for people dying without Spenser or Susan being heartbroken?
Pearl is getting much older, and they talk about putting her down soon. So the 'aging' is being seen here ... Hawk makes an appearance as does Vinnie and a few other characters. They actually get out to Worcester in one of the final scenes.
Generally enjoyable, but it really does seem like it's trying to 'make up for' mistakes of the past ...
