Spenser is hired by a law firm to find out the truth about the death of a wealthy college student. One of the lawyers is sort of feeling guilty about putting away a black guy who says he didn't kill the girl. Hawk helps out, as the "black community" and the "white racists" go around in circles. The real suspect is a black adopted child of a rich white couple. Interesting class discussions. Healey, from "Pale Kings", factors in here, as do quite a few other "blasts from the past".
Lisa's Notes Susan is more ponderous in this one; the subject weighty and important. Spenser is aging gracefully, thinking more than charging ahead. There are discussions on family and relationships. He barely survives being shot and goes through a long rehabilitation with Susan. He has to face his own mortality, the responsibilities he has, deal with all sorts of annoying people. Definitely a case where he does what he does because it's "right", not because the ones he's helping appreciates it. |
