An interesting one - it's not often that Hawk fails at anything he chooses to do. Here there's a young man named Louis who is stealing dresses from his employer. Spenser's set to figure out what is going on, while Hawk is hired by the guy to keep him safe while he fences the stolen dresses. Bizarrely, despite Hawk's attentions, the killers do actually get to Louis. So Hawk is grumpy.
They realize in short order that the owner of the dress maker is being pressured into working with criminals. He can't seem to escape from it. Finally his only choice is to push the criminal into killing him. He then has an audio tape released that turns over his factory to one of his workers that he trusts.
An interesting story about worker's rights, but not much real meat here.
