Spenser is hired to handle a ransom drop, but things go awry. He tries to track down who is holding the executive for ransom and is stymied at every turn. He realizes the executive is being held in a certain spot based on seeing the Boston Museum of Science tower in the background on the random video tape. Unfortunately by the time he and Hawk get there, the executive is gone. I'll note that Hawk MISSES his shots in this section!! Hawk? Miss?
Spenser keeps trying to figure out what's happening, and then the executive is dumped, dead. Spenser feels guilty. But it turns out that the executive was long dead - there was no chance of ever saving him.
It turns out it was the wife all along, wanting to kill her husband and get her money. Sad, sad.
