Birthstone List
Birthstones have been around since the days of the Bible. When Aaron made his breastplate from gems of the 12 tribes of Israel, each of those stones was associated with a zodiac sign. Those have come down to us with only a few minor alterations over the thousands of years.
Note that months do not exactly match up with zodiac sign ranges. For example Garnet is the gem for January, and it is also the gem for Aquarius (January 21 - February 18). So depending on when you were born, you may have one gem as your birthstone by month, and another gem for your birthstone by zodiac sign.

January Normally January and Aquarius (Jan 21 - Feb 18) is associated with garnet. For origami purposes, I find that the gorgeous stone of hematite, which also has red symbology, works much better. |

February February and Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 20) are associate with amethyst, the royal purple stone of kings and queens. |

March March and Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20) are associated with Jade, the ancient stone of China. |

April April and Taurus (Apr 21 - May 21) are normally associated with diamonds, but you can't make diamond beads! Instead, get the sparkling beauty with finely cut crystals. |

May May and Gemini (May 22 - Jun 21) are associated with the exotic tiger's eye gem. They also are associated with emeralds and sapphires. |

June June and Cancer (Jun 22 - Jul 22) are associated with the moonstone. The moon controls the tides, and the crab is certainly affected by those! |

July July and Leo (Jul 23 - Aug 23) would normally be represented by the ruby. As this is rather expensive for an origami crane, I recommend the rose quartz option for the same warmth and love symbology. |

August August and Virgo (Aug 24 - Sep 22) is associated with carnelian, a stone much appreciated by the Romans. Note that other stones associated with this month are the diamond, sapphire and periodot. |

September September and Libra (Sep 23 - Oct 23) are represented by green stones such as malachite and periodot. |

October October and Scorpio (Oct 24 - Nov 22) are normally represented by opal, but this is not an ideal stone for origami beads. Very similar to opal - and very gorgeous - is Laminar, a stone which glows with the blue of the sea. |

November November and Saggitarius (Nov 23 - Dec 21) are associated with the topaz, citrine and pearl. Lapis Lazuli with its ancient usage and relations to the sea carries many of the same meanings. |

December December and Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 20) are the odd ones in the group, because it seems the stone gets changed often for this! They have gotten over the years the ruby, blue topaz, turquoise and tanzanite. The one stone that stays constant is black onyx - and this is the grounding stone in the chakra. |
