Japanese Movie Listing - I
It's fascinating how many movies begin with the letter I! One of them, Ikiru, is considered to be the greatest movie (Ikiru) by a man considered by many to be the greatest director in Japan (Akira Kurosawa). The Idiot (Hakuchi) (1951)
Dostoevski's Russian novel is transported by Kurosawa across two centuries to post-war Japan, where the madness and jealousy continues to rage. Toshiro Mifune, Masayuki Mori. Directed by: Akira Kurosawa.

Ikiru (1952) 140m. Directed by Akira Kurosawa, Ikiru is considered by many to be his finest movie. Takashi Shimura is brilliantly subtle as a worn down bureaucrat who realizes he will die in a few months from stomach cancer. He goes through stages of grief - denial, rebellion, dealing with his family. The movie explores both his reactions and the reactions of those around him as they come to grips with his actions. A movie to take your time with; it is a slow portrayal of how the layers of management can work against each other, and how one man strives to take a stand against that. |
I Live In Fear (Ikimono No Kiroku) (1955)
An elderly wealthy owner of a foundry, becomes increasingly fearful of atomic war and tries to convince his family to move to Brazil with him. After burning down his foundry, he is placed in an institution where he finds peace in the delusion that he has escaped to another planet. Directed by: Akira Kurosawa.
Immortal Combat (1993)
Detective John Keller (played by Roddy Pipper) and his Japanese partener J.J. (played by Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba) battle an army of men trained in ninja and guerilla warfare and who seem to possess immortal powers.
The Inferno of First Love (1968)
(Hatsukoi Jigoku-hen) D: Hani Susumu. A coming of age story, with tragic consequences. A 'new wave' film that flirts with the very devices of filmmaking. Sex is the focus of a young man's maturation.

In the Realm of the Senses (1976-Japan/France) 105m. Sexually insatiable woman would do anything to possess husband. Explicit, controversial, often erotic; well-acted but overall a pretentious film. (Pretentious is a good word ... Lisa) D: Nagisa Oshima. |
Irezume: The spirit of tattoo (1982) (Sekka Tomurai-zashi)
D:Takabayashi Yoichi. A young woman pleases her lover by having her back elaborately tattooed. Erotic tale of obsession and pain.
The Island (1962) 96m
D: Kaneto Shindo. Engrossing documentary-style study of peasant family living on rocky island near Japan, struggling to survive. Visually stunning - contains no dialogue.
