Yu-Gi-Oh!, cards, and duel monsters
Yu-Gi-Oh! is the latest anime craze to hit the world, with a card battle game built right into it. The story has the heroes Yugi, Tristan, Joey and Tea enjoying the Duel Monsters game. These card battles let the players pit magical creature against magical creature. The game is based (in the series) on a similar game played in ancient Egypt with real creatures, which got out of hand until a stop was put to it.
Yugi is given a mystical Egyptian gift by his grandfather which gives him special powers, turning him into Yami Yugi. His grandfather is soon kidnapped, and Yugi is forced to play through a card tournament to try to rescue him.

The series is appealing because ordinary kids (i.e. Yugi) become more confident and powerful when they use the cards. Also, because because the show is based on cards, it's easy for the card games that are put out to appeal to watchers!
Yugi is a shy high school freshman, who gains confidence in his alter ego.
Joey is his street-smart friend who is loyal but a bit feisty.
Tea is the female in the group, who thinks things through and encourages them.
Tristan is a bit worried, and panics, but in the end is there for his friends.
