Parakeet Budgie and Keet Sleeping Habits

These MPG videos are on the large size, but if you have a cable connection, they are well worth looking at! They show how a parakeet falls asleep. They start by finding a comfortable spot that is warm and safe. They settle in to that spot. Then they slowly start to close their eyes. They don't just immediately close their eyes and POOF fall asleep. That wouldn't be safe to do in the wild! Instead, they close their eyes for a moment, then open them to see if it's still safe. They close their eyes again, then open them. The "settle in" in stages, taking little peeks to make sure all is still safe before they truly fall asleep.

Even when parakeets are asleep, they wake up VERY easily, because in the wild they had to be alert to the slightest sound of danger. That is why it's important that a parakeet's sleep area be very quiet. If they keep hearing noises, they will keep waking up, and won't get a good sleep.

The little blue bird in the front is Santo, while the larger blue bird in the back is Pinto. Watch in the second video how Pinto gets "lower and lower" on the perch as she falls asleep, resting herself on the perch.
