One Foot
Parakeet Budgie and Keet Sleeping Habits

Parakeets don't lie down on their sides. Their poor feet must support their bodies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Just imagine if you had to stand up on your feet for your entire life! Your feet would get VERY tired and want to have a rest.

Santo does a one-foot

To help their feet get a momentary rest, parakeets will perch on one foot sometimes. You've probably seen flamingos do this in movies. This lets the parakeet give their lifted foot a rest for a while.

Santo again does a one-foot

This is VERY normal behavior. Do try to make sure that the keet is using different feet every once in a while though. If your keet always hops around on one foot only, and will not put weight on the second foot, it's a sign that something is wrong with that second foot and that the keet needs to be taken quickly to a vet.

Parakeets aren't perfectly still when they one-foot. They are constantly adjusting their balance. Try standing on one foot yourself for a minute. Really, stand up and give it a try :) You'll find that you wiggle a little left and right, maintaining your balance. Here's a video of Santo, doing the one-foot.
