What Sex Keet Should I Get?

Parakeets, like most creatures in the world, come in two sex types - male and female. The females are the ones that lay the eggs and keep the nests clean. The males are the ones that impregnate the females and protect their territory.

This means that in general the males are very vocal, and more easily learn how to talk and sing. In general the males are very "chewy" - they love to gnaw on things because they are practicing their valuable skill of hollowing out tree holes for nests.

That being said, it is nearly impossible to know for sure if a keet is male or female when it is young enough to buy and train. If you get a very old keet that is clearly male or female, it's past the training age where it's easy to train the bird. In fact, many people have old keets and still don't know whether they are male or female! The only way to know 100% for sure is to have a vet tell you. Anything else - guessing at nose color or personality - is pure guesswork.

Also, I know many male keets that gnaw and many female keets that talk and sing beautifully. Keets are all very unique creatures. I know keets that are shy, keets that are outgoing, keets that love carrots, keets that hate carrots, you name it. Every single keet you see in a store is going to be different, based on their own little brains. Just like you are different from other people in the world, because you have a special brain of your own.

In short, I wouldn't try to buy a bird based on gender. I would buy a bird that seemed the most lively, inquisitive, alert bird in the flock - that is also the youngest. That is the most important thing to look for.
