Cat Litter Basic Info

Cats are creatures that grew up for tens of thousands of years in the wild. Their systems are evolved to live in the wild. Cats, like all creatures, have to get rid of excess material that they eat and drink. However, cats are very neat and clean creatures. They don't like to just leave their pee and poo all over the area that they live in. They take great care to dig out a little hole, go to the bathroom in that hole, and then cover it up. That same instinct holds true when they are inside a house. However, most houses don't have dirt floors for them to do this to.

That is where litter comes in. It allows a cat to use his or her natural instinct, to go to the bathroom in a clean and sanitary manner. It's important for you to clean your litter box daily for this reason - your cat doesn't like the stench of pee or poo any more than you do! They want a fresh area to hide their new waste.

It's important to have a litter box big enough for your cat to turn around in, as your cat looks to find the proper place to do the business at hand. It needs to be deep enough that your cat can bury the results - but not so deep that litter is sprayed out of the box while the cat does the digging. It should of course be gentle on the cat's paws. Shards of glass would be an inappropriate litter material!!

There are MANY choices on the market as far as litter products, with a variety of claims. Some clump well for easy cleaning. Some deodorize well. Some are environmentally friendly. Be sure to look through your choices to find the litter that best suits your family's needs!
