Wet Food, Canned Food, Dry Food Comparison
Like all living creatures, cats have to eat. In the wild, they got a balanced diet involving protein, grass, and other vegetation. They rarely ate grain, of course. Most of what they ate was very juicy, so that they got their water naturally in their food. The food they ate was all soft - they avoided eating hard, crunchy things as they were usually inedible. Cats would catch a mouse and eat the tender meaty parts, but NOT bite into the hard bones. Then comes along the lazy, modern world. We humans don't want to spend time or energy to keep our cats healthy! So we buy them dry, hard food that lasts for months and is mostly grain. Cats are forced to eat dry, crunchy things - which they don't like - and are not getting good nutrition out of the food.
Is it any wonder that our cats are far less healthy than they should be?
Dry Cat Food
If you are feeding cats dry nuggets, first of all, that's not what their mouths are made to eat. Their mouths are made to eat soft food, not dried crunchy things. Second, when a super-dry item ends up in their stomach, it "hydrates" there by absorbing the moistness from the cat's stomach. The food is actually making the cat's body even less water-rich, instead of adding water TO the cat's body! It's simply not good for the cat.
I realize that some people say dry food is necessary for cat dental health. I address that in my health page on Cat Dental Health.
Canned Cat Food
On one hand, canned cat food is a step up in the food chain. The cats are getting liquid in a more easily digestible manner. They usually are getting better nutrition - i.e. less grain and corn - in a wet food. It's still not wonderful, though. Wet food can often be a ground up paste of bird beaks and feet. It can still have a lot of corn starch and thickener in it. If it is junk food, and that junk food sticks to the cat's teeth, then it can exacerbate dental issues. Finally, cats were never meant to eat puree paste. They were meant to eat chunks of meat.
Pouch Wet Cat Food
I definitely highly recommend pouch wet cat food. This is not hard dried out nuggets - they are moist, sealed, in a gravy. This is not bland puree - it has distinct nuggets of meat that cats enjoy eating. I've done reviews of many pouch foods and pretty much all of them are better than the vast majority of dried foods out on the market. So if you're feeding your cat even a "cheap" pouch food you're still doing better than most of the other food on the market. If you feed your cat a GOOD pouch food, you're getting the optimum nutrition that your cat needs to live a long, healthy life.
Your cat can only eat what's in his or her bowl. Your cat can't go buy fresher, healthier foods to eat. It's your responsibility as the owner to provide food that is very healthy and good for your cat!
