Friskies Hairball Remedy

Friskies Hairball Remedy is a triangle-shaped yellow treat that to its credit, actually has chicken as its #1 ingredient. The instructions are to feed your cat 3-6 pieces a day until he stops having hairballs ... and then to keep feeding him 3-6 pieces twice a week for life to ensure the hairballs don't return :)

The top ingredients in this are:

chicken
wheat flour
soy flour
petrolatum
water
animal digest
corn syrup
wheat gluten
chicken by-prdouct meal

OK so we start with wheat, and then we go into flours and oils, then into some more questionable beak bits and foot bits. But let's back up a bit. Just what IS a hairball?

I have a Page on Cat Hairballs but to summarize, if a cat gets too much hair in her stomach from regular cleaning, it can ball up and cause a problem. Normal amounts of hair from grooming are just pooped out. Large amounts of hair ball up and can either get stuck going down the intestine or can need to be thrown back up. If you are brushing your cat regularly, she really shouldn't ingest enough hair to cause a hairball.

If your cat DOES get hairballs for whatever reason, in nature she would eat grass to help it "go down smoothly". So you can always feed your cat grass, or a more fiber-filled food to do the same thing. Oils also work very well.

I would really recommend feeding your cat a healthy, fiber-rich daily food, and brushing her regularly, vs making "treats" filled with flours a regular part of her daily diet.
