Quebec Ice Hotel Photos and Notes
Saturday Morning - Quebec City
Okey dokey, it was the day we were going to get to the ice hotel! We woke up bright and early at 9:30, and soon we were off. It was quite frosty here in northern Vermont, with huge icicles on the buildings. We had my favorite breakfast - McDonalds Egg McMuffin!

The border crossing was very easy, just a few cars in line. We handed over our passports, they asked us a few questions, and we were through. Welcome to Quebec! While the drive up to this point had been very mountainous, it became flat almost instantly and while there were some patches of forest, much of the drive was straight lines through flat snowy fields. The rivers we crossed were all frozen solid. We did take photos on the way back, but not on the way up. We took one minor wrong turn but in about 3 hours (so around 1pm) we were coming into the range of Quebec City.
After so many miles of emptiness, the city sort of sprang up from nothingness. Quebec city is right on the northern shore of the gigantic Saint Laurence River, and is the only fortified city in North America. It of course was built by the French to guard this waterway from the evil English. Here are some photos of the large bridges that cross the river, and the massive ice flows floating in it.

We got off at the exit for the Old City and headed straight down the road. There was an easy to spot milestone - a hotel by the old city has a rotating restaurant on its top. So we just drove straight down the road towards that.

The houses were very sturdy and "colonial New England" in appearance. Many had plastic garages put up to keep the snow off the cars.
