Hair Basics Tips and Info
Just like our fingernails, hair is in essence dead, inert material. If hair was alive, it would probably hurt to cut it! You have a hair follicle in your skin which creates the hair - but the hair itself is simply a dead strand of protein. There is an inner core, and an outer cuticle which is in essence a series of overlapping flaps. The color of hair you have is based on genetics. Your father and mother contributed to your DNA make-up, which determines which hair color you have. If your mom and dad were both red-heads, it's very likely that you will be a red-head as well. The same is true for your hair texture. Traits such as curly hair, straight hair, etc. are passed down from parents to kids.
Since hair is dead, it cannot be "made healthy" by any products. It can only be made shiny, or colored, or the cuticle layer can be made smooth. The follicle, of course, is a living cell and does respond to vitamins. It is critical that you have a healthy diet and ample water in order for your follicles to create a nice looking strand of hair.
