Current Tasks - Time Management

The very first step in getting a handle on your time management is to take an inventory of what you are doing NOW. There's no way to fix or improve a situation until you really have a good sense of what is currently going on. The best way to do this is to write it down.

Get a tiny notepad to carry with you in your pocket or purse. Anything cheap will do. Now, for a week, write down what you're doing as you go, with times. It might seem a little tedious. Stick with it. It's only one week and it will be a CRITICAL step in improving your life. So many studies have shown how this helps with weight loss, with sleep problems and with many other issues. It most definitely is important in time management.

Don't judge. It's fine to watch TV for 4 hours if you're worn down. If you're stuck in line for 20 minutes at the store, make a note. If your daily commute takes an hour, note that. Don't try to change what you're doing for this week. Simple observe quietly and see what is going on in your life.

If you don't normally keep a clock on your desk, now might be the time to get even a cheap one to have there to glance at. Try to keep track of projects as much as you can. This doesn't have to be an exact science. The key is to get a general idea of what is going on.

I know a week can sound like a long time. Start with just ONE DAY. Just for today, write down what you're doing. Start right now even if it's in the middle of the day. No need to wait. Start seeing how your daily life tends to go.
