Hana Zen Restaurant

Hana Zen is located right in the Union Square area of San Francisco, and is tucked in a row of buildings. Definitely keep an eye out for it and get in there if you get the chance!
The restaurant normally requires reservations but you can also be lucky (as we were) and get yourself a seat at the sushi bar. There's a nice raked-sand garden to one side and cool hanging blue-glass lights to keep your meal well lit. There are a nice collection of sake to sample, although intriguingly the sake is served in a regular shot glass. The well worn wood bar speaks to the legions of fans this restaurant attracts. If I lived in this area I could easily see myself visiting weekly (if not more frequently).
The sushi was simply stunning, very fresh and tasty. The chef was friendly and chatted about all manner of things, explaining details about each sushi piece. The presentation was simply gorgeous as well. This wasn't pretentious by any stretch of the imagination though - it was all about delicious food served in a pleasing manner.
