Books and Cookbooks -
Japanese Gift Giving Guide

While the web is chock-full of information on Japan, sometimes it is nice to have a real book in your hands while you lounge on the futon and sip sake. Here are some of my favorite Japanese books and cookbooks, all from amazon.com.

 The Ink Dark Moon
This has got to be my most favorite book on Japanese Poetry ever. Give it a read and see what you think.

  100 Poems from the Japanese
I refer to this book often - it has poetry from a number of poets, just perfect for any occasion and emotion. Use this to add something perfect to your next gift card.

The Zen Gardening Kit/Book and Japanese Rock Garden
On first glance this may seem almost silly. A desktop rock garden? I have one though, and it's really fun to play with. When you get it just right, it's very calming to look over at the sand and remember that work isn't everything.

  Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind
I truly think everybody should learn some Zen. It's too easy to get caught up, in our modern society, in working 24 hours a day and neglecting your health in order to 'get ahead'. Just where does that road lead? Take the time to take care of yourself, and enjoy today.

  Japanese Family-Style Recipes
A great cookbook if you want to see what authentic Japanese food is like! Practice on your family, and then impress your friends the next time they come to visit!

The Ancient Arts of Origami & Kirigami The Ancient Arts of Origami & Kirigami

Anything but square. Your raw material is a simple square of paper, but through the ancient Japanese arts you can create almost anything under the sun. A few folds and you have a treasure box, a sailboat, a piano, an iris, a ring. A few snips with the scissors and you have a snowflake,a cloud, an ornament. Each kit includes paper and an illustrated step-by-step instruction book. Ages 8 and up.
