Takahashi's how to speak Japanese with roman letters

This little red phrasebook is perfect for carrying in your purse or back pocket, to get through normal day to day activities on a trip to Japan. The Japanese phrases are all done with English (Roman) letters so that you can sound out the words to pronounce them.

The phrases give you a number of options. If it's about time, they will list out all the time options right there on the page so you can easily choose the one you need.

They have both the things you say as well as phrases the salesperson or other person is likely to say back to you. That way you can hear their words and look to see - phonetically - if it matches up with common responses. They have a glossary of medical terms and body parts in the back - always quite handy!

The age of this book shows. It was written in 1977 and talks about looking for public phones, buying typewriters and transistor radios.

There are the usual little quirks in books like these. Some of the examples are far too specific where a more generic example would have been much more helpful. Also, in the section where someone asks you if they can smoke, your only response is yes!

Still, a nice little phrasebook that can come in handy.
