Tomoe Gozen

Tomoe Gozen was a high level female samurai in the time of the Gempei War - around 1000 AD. She rode into battle and fought as skillfully and valiantly as any male samurai.

Tomoe Gozen served under Minamoto Yoshinaka, a high level lord of the Minamoto clan. The Gempei War was about the Minamotos fighting with the Taira. As one of his top commanders, she led men into battle and was well respected.

At this period of time many women were skilled with a long spear, or naginata, to protect their home and children from thieves and raiders. Tomoe, however, was incredibly talented with both bow and sword. She was also an amazing horsewoman. She was often chosen for dangerous scouting missions because of her great skill.

Tomoe was also said to have been quite lovely, with long hair and fine features. She became the lover of Yoshinaka, but would never 'stay behind' when danger was about. She wanted to put her soldier's skills to their best use.

When the Minamoto won the war, Yoshinaka wanted to be the head of the new ruling class. A battle ensued, and Yoshinaka's forces were overcome. Yoshinaka and Tomoe stood their ground and died in the final onrush.
