Mariko goes through with her suicide threat but at the last minute Ishido shows up and gives her and her group permission to leave. Anjin carries her out of the area, as she is too weak to walk.
Kiku cries because Lord Toronaga bought her contract - she could never see Omi again. Ishido grabs Yabu. Now Anjin sits with Mariko and the other women, watching over her. She wakes and admits to Anjin that she's been planning this release of the hostages since the earthquake.
Yabu kills the captain of the guard and, following Ishido's orders, sends a signal to the ninja. He then lets them in to attack. The ninja easily slay scores of samurai but fall quickly to Anjin's counters.
Mariko, Anjin and two other women run into a secret, protected room. Anjin tries to pry open the exit while Mariko bargains at the main door. The ninja blow the door, see Mariko is dead and run away.
Anjin is temporarily blinded as the funeral for Mariko is held. They create her in a giant funeral pyre. A priest comes - sent by Ishido - to help Anjin back to his ship. They stop at the Father Priest's location, and together the two priests escort Anjin back to his galley.
Ferriera is waiting for them with a stake. The father priest threatens the group with excommunication if they harm Anjin, and Ferriera tries to shoot Anjin. The father priest blocks his way, and the samurai shoot Ferriera dead. Rodrigues is made Captain. He tells Anjin that Anjin's ship has burned. The galley rides back to Anjiro, and sure enough, the burnt hulk of the ship is there.
Anjin's fellow sailor collapses from madness at being stranded. Toronaga and the priest show up, and Anjin is furious at the priest, accusing the priest of burning his ship. The priests swears solemnly that he truly knows nothing of it. Anjin is shocked.
Toronaga brings out Kiku, the prostitute, and give her to Anjin. Anjin in turn gives her to Omi, who she loves. The two are very thankful. Toronaga tells Yabu he knows of the deception.
The priest admits to Anjin that he knows of how much Anjin and Mariko cared for each other. That he's sorry for Anjin's loss. Soon Yabu is committing suicide and gives his sword to Yabu. Yabu then kills himself.
Toronaga now gives Anjiro to Anjin to control. He also gives Anjin a letter that Mariko left him. Mariko tells Anjin that she chose Anjin over his ship, and that Anjin should now just build another one. The narrator comes in explaining that Toronaga plans to keep destroying the ships, because Anjin should live. It also explains that Toronaga killed Ishido and became Shogun.
