Rodrigues tells the priest that with Anjin refitting his ship, they're in trouble. The black ship cannot defend itself against that warship. Meanwhile, Anjin and Mariko snuggle together.
Rodrigues comes to visit Anjin, as Anjin is travelling towards Yedo. Rodrigues arrives at Anjin's room and Anjin's guards insist he be searched. While Rodrigues claims he's a friend, they find many weapons. Rodrigues admits that they are enemies now.
Mariko and Anjin reach the first bridge of Edo - the marker of the end of their relationship. They cross, looking at each other while they do. Edo castle is Lord Toronaga's home and stronghold. Anjin learns his men are nearby but he can't see his ship right now. Anjin asks Toronaga in private to talk to Father Alvito but doesn't understand Toronaga's answer.
Mariko fights with Buntaro and he gets so upset he snaps his sword. Anjin goes up to see his men and is amazed how filthy and barbaric they are. When he leaves them, he strips his clothes off immediately and demands a quick bath.
Toronaga has Anjin watch as he instructs his son and daughter-in-law to put his children to death, as a test of loyalty. The two are very unhappy, but the son goes off to do it while the wife waits. The son returns and says his kids are missing. Toronaga brings kids out - safe - and says the parents passed the test.
Anjin has the priest ask Toronaga for Mariko's hand in marriage, and Toronaga forbids Anjin to ever speak of it agan. Anjin is miserable. Fujiko shows up, nicely healed. Anjin is amazed at the healing.
Anjin asks Mariko to help him convince Toronaga to let him take the black ship - that would give Toronaga a way out of the council's demands. Toronaga's isn't there to talk to them though - Yabu is. Together they watch each of Anjin's new samurai swear loyalty. One is the samurai that had been kicked out of the priesthood.
Anjin is given his ship and told to take it to Anjiro immediately. Mariko is going to Osaka. The priest sees the ship leaving and worries about it. He then goes to the site of his new cathedral which is being built and finds Mariko there.
Mariko tells the priest about an assassination plot in return for Anjin's life. She then confesses to him of her infidelities. In Anjiro, Anjin's ex-Christian samurai warns that there is a traitor in the group and has Anjin require every samurai to step on an icon.
Anjin goes on a galley to Osaka and is greeted by a man from the Emperor. Yabu is ordered to the castle, and Ishido invites Anjin to a birthday party for Lady Ochiba. The ex-priest samurai says this is a great honor, but Anjin has no desire to go back into Ishido's castle.
Anjin is told that in 19 days the council will gather and the Emperor will be there - so Toronaga must appear. Anjin says that by then he'll take the black ship and turn the tables. Suddenly there's an attack and Anjin's ex-priest samurai is slain.
Anjin goes in to the party. Mariko is there. Anjin gives Ochiba a flower as a present. Ishido comments that a barbarian is giving flowers, and Anjin proudly says he is a hatamoto - he is a samurai. Ishido laughs merrily and then goes back to his stony face.
Now Mariko says she must escort 2 of Toronaga's remaining women out of the castle. Mariko says this was an order for her - so she must commit suicide.
