In Part 3 of the Shogun miniseries, Anjin-san is brought from Ishido's castle back to the village where he began.

The story opens with Anjin-san, Lady Mariko and their entourage preparing to leave Ishido's castle. Mariko tells Anjin that Lord Toronaga cannot come along, because Lord Ishido controls who enters and leaves his castle.

When one of the ladies in the party seems to trip and distracts everyone, Anjin sees Lord Toronaga sneak into one of the carriers in a disguise. Soon after they set out, Lord Ishido shows up and asks to give a message to that carrier. When Ishido is about to discover Toronaga's prescence, Anjin dances around as if mad to distract the group and leads them out to safety. Mariko shields his dancing body with her own, preventing Ishido's group from shooting Anjin.

Anjin tells Mariko she is brave and beautiful, and she shyly dissuades him. The group is ambushed by bandits but continues onward. In the meantime, Ishido is given a letter from Toronaga saying that Toronaga has resigned from the Council of Regents, in essence meaning Ishido cannot control him. Also, the council now only has 4 regents and must choose another. Hopefully Toronaga can get to safety before that occurs.

The group reaches the galley, which is guarded by Ishido's samurai. They distract some and fight with the rest. They clear out the bodies and up strolls Toronaga to board his boat.

Unfortunately, Ishido's men block the harbor. Toronaga, Mariko and Anjin go aboard the Portuguese ship to negotiate. They ask for 20 muskets and offer a church in return. Captain Ferrier agrees in return for next year's black ship captaincy and Anjin. Toronaga agrees.

Anjin and Mariko are dropped off in Anjiro - the town he started in - so he can learn Japanese. Yabu says the village will be slain unless they help Anjin learn Japanese fully in 6 months - and Anjin threatens suicide unless this be rescinded. Yabu indeed changes his mind and agrees that whatever Anjin learns will be enough.

Mariko sneaks in with Anjin and sleeps with him - but warns him the next day that this can never be spoken of. A married woman caught with another man would be put to death.

At the end of this part, the servants bring Anjin a pheasant, which he hangs from the rafters to dry.
