Henry V Soundtrack Review

Henry V was Kenneth Branagh's first movie that he directed, and it was Patrick Doyle's first soundtrack that he created. Not only that, but they had to follow the Laurence Olivier version with a soundtrack by William Walton. Interestingly, Zimmer, who wrote my favorite soundtrack to Gladiator, counts Walton (although the Battle of Britain score) as one of his favorites.

In any case, Henry V with Brannagh and Emma Thompson was a triumph, and the music that went with it was simply amazing. The movie wasn't a "flag-waving" promotional piece - it got into the rough dirt of war, and the fact that you had to persevere even when your bones were aching and you were starving. The St Crispin's speech is brilliant, but most (including me) love the Non Nobis Domine at the end. It's Doyle who begins the song!

They even got the CSBO into the studio for the very first time ever, and everything was just perfect. Brannagh and Doyle would try later to recapture the magic, but this CD is truly spectacular.
