Wolf - d20 Stats and Information
Wolves are common animals in much of the world, and fit in to most RPG campaigns as well. They are useful both as random encounters and plot problems.
You might run across a solitary wolf that is out scouting or patrolling its territory, or a full wolf pack. A wolf pack is made up of a primary couple - the alpha male and alpha female. There would also be the young of that couple, plus perhaps a few other younger animals. Both the male and female will defend the family group fiercely.
Wolves are extremely intelligent. They will not simply attack in a mad rush. They will coordinate their attacks, with some going ahead and others hanging behind to lure the victim into the trap. They can hold as a territory over 100 square miles. They live in dens, which are often caves, while the pups are young, but roam around when the pups are more mobile.

Wolves do not hoard any sort of treasure, but their skins are very valuable, especially in colder locations. Wolf teeth are often used in jewelry and slaying a well known wolf could result in teeth that can be sold for a lot in that local area.
If you want to have a treasure, consider the wolf den. Since wolves raise their pups in dens, you could have the wolves living in a cave that was once used as a hideout by bandits. Maybe the wolves killed a bandit or two before moving in, or maybe the bandits' loot was simply left in there when the bandits were killed in other manners.
