Zem Han Restaurant Review

Zem Han in Northborough, Massachusetts is a fascinating restaurant. Created by a Russian defector, it features middle eastern cuisine. Lamb figures heavily on the menu.

I went there in January 2013 with a friend who had been there before. I believe when we arrived that we were the only patrons in the restaurant. By the time we left there had been two other groups. They had just gotten their wine license the day before, and had a single bottle of wine on the "list", so that might have been part of the challenge. The wine was $7/glass.

We ordered the stuff grape leaves as an appetizer, and both of us ordered the special - a lamb shank. We were given pita bread to start - the bread was fresh, soft, and delicious, with a nice spread. The appetizers came out promptly and were also quite tasty.

The lamb shank was superb. My friend ate her whole dish. I brought half of mine home for my boyfriend and he loved it. It came with a large dish of rice.

One note of issue was with the dessert. I've been craving chocolate cake for weeks and when I saw a chocolate cake with chocolate chips on the menu I was delighted. It sounded absolutely perfect. However, what I got was chocolate mousse. Yes, I like chocolate mousse, but I had been craving chocolate cake. They're not the same thing.

The dirty appetizer dish was left on the table until the dessert round was through.

Also, once we paid the bill, we were ignored. My water glass had already been empty and it sat empty while we talked. I finally had to flag the waitress down to ask if I could have some more water while we talked. We had tipped well, so asking for another glass of water didn't seem like a lot. And the place was very quiet, so it shouldn't have been an imposition for them to keep even a casual eye on us to see if we might need more water while we talked.

Still, the food was great and in general I enjoyed it here.
