Sofia, Hudson Restaurant Review
There's a story behind my visit to Sofia. I wanted to treat a friend of mine to a special dinner, to thank her for helping me on a project. We were going to go to Chloe's in Hudson, but they were closed on Monday. So I looked up Sofia on the web. My friend didn't want to go there because she'd heard all sorts of bad reviews about it. I am generally an optomistic person and reasoned with her that people only tell you when they have a bad experience - you don't hear when things were good. So she gave in and agreed to go wtih me to Sofia's for our dinner. There was only one other table occupied when we went into Sofia's. The decor was quiet but nice - soft Italian music was playing, the atmosphere was fairly neutral. The server came over and gave us our menus. A long while passed before he returned to take our orders. My friend let him know she's allergic to nuts, and made her selection, as did I. It was almost as if he wanted to get done as quickly as possible. I gave my main dish order and he was about to immediately leave. So I had to keep him there to order my appetizer - and he again tried to leave. So I had to get him back to order my glass of wine. It was a bit uncomfortable feeling.
He brought my wine, and then some bread. The bread was bland and we both felt it was stale. It was not pleasant to eat.
I had a salad - my friend had wanted one, but they only served it with one type of dressing and she didn't like the dressing. The salad was nice - shredded lettuce, a few toppings. I enjoyed it.
Then came the main dish. He joked about there being a lot of nuts in my friend's dish, which I took as a friendly sort of humor, but she was a little uncomfortable with it. Both of our dishes - my veal, her chicken - were very bland and tough. The vegetables were nearly burnt, as were the potatoes. I brought the potatoes home to show my boyfriend and he was very surprised that any restaurant would serve something that looked like that. Never mind a restaurant where the entrees are in the $20-$30 price range.
Dessert time. I ordered a chocolate mousse - but it came out as white chocolate, with a tiny amount of dark chocolate in the middle. I'm not a fan fo white chocolate. If the item is a white chocolate mousse, it really should say that. My friend enjoyed her dessert.
Then we had to sit for a VERY long time before our check arrived.
If this was a $12/entree restaurant we might have given a pass to the various problems, but with this costing $25/plate, to get poor service, burnt food, and tough meat is extremely surprising. Especially when there are countless other restaurants in the area which charge less money for far better food.
As much as I wanted to redeem Sofia and show that they could be a lovely place to eat, I'm afraid they have only confirmed what the others have said. They need to do an overhaul of their cooking techniques before I would be willing to go here again.
