Mezcal, Worcester Restaurant Review

Mezcal is a a Mexican restaurant with a focus - it has a TON of margaritas on the menu, of a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. They will also make other drinks for you, but margaritas are the prime star. Over the times we've been here we've tried a number of them and each one in each style was enjoyable. For example I enjoy the peach-pear-apricot one, but one of my friends enjoys the berry one, another enjoys the house one in frozen style, and so on.

They have a small outdoor seating area, but all the times I've been there I ate inside. The inside is nice as well, with a bar side and a dining side. Note that there's a "raised" area to the dining side with three tables in it that overlooks the main dining area. The staff seems to feel that this is the prime, secluded area, like a VIP area. While I suppose it's nice to have fewer people around you, it's also very loud because it's enclosed, and it's also fairly dark so if you have less than perfect sight it's harder to read the menu.

The wait staff is very friendly, and quite willing to make special options available. It shows how important a happy wait staff is to a pleasant restaurant experience. Every time we've come I've been impressed by how happy the wait staff seems and how they want to make sure you're enjoying the food.

The food here is very nicely prepared. Over the various visitos we have tried a number of different things and each one was very tasty. Different tacos, burritos, empanadas, you name it. Fresh, flavorful, good combination of spices and flavors. It's not heavy or bland food like you might find at some Mexican style restaurants.

Now to the down side. They cover the tables with craft paper for a reason. The food they serve is very messy. The nachos are hard to eat without bits spilling everywhere. The tacos are sometimes soft tacos which isn't clear from the description and are challenging to eat. You end up with a table covered with bits of things which isn't very appetizing. Also, the burritos, which are typically my favorite food at a Mexican restaurant, say they come with a cream (i.e. a sour cream). What they really mean is there's a tiny decorative drizzle on top, which doesn't really help in terms of how typically this is eaten. I think in general we've had a number of cases where what we thought we were getting based on the description and what we actually got were not the same.

So it's good to go in with the expectation of a mess, to wear clothes that are appropriate for that, and to ask lots of questions about your dish to be sure what you get is what you wanted.

Still, I have to say again that the food is really good :)

I highly recommend Mezcal for people who enjoy Mexican food in a laid back, friendly environment. If the only Mexican food you've ever had is at the low-end, bland Mexican restaurants, you're in for a real treat here. It's not about kick-your-pants-off spicy. It's real flavors and wonderful textures.
