Fiddler's Green Restaurant Review

Fiddler's Green is a small Irish restaurant and bar located near Kelly Square in Worcester MA. The entry way is not encouraging - unlike the many Irish pubs I adore in ireland, with their rich ambiance, the entryway here (being part of an Irish Club) is very utilitarian and drab. There's a pair of flights of stairs that go around an elevator lift. Then on the second floor you reach the "real doors".

The atmosphere changes suddenly here - and you might imagine that you HAVE teleported, somehow, into a quiet part of Ireland. A large wooden bar setup lines the back wall, with lovely, dark carved wood. There are a few booths and several tables around the small room. The wall decor is classic Irish pub - thin signs pointing the way to various Irish towns, photos of famous Irish people, framed album covers of Irish records. Depending on the whim of the moment, the music might be Irish, or it might be something more modern.

The menu is a mix of sandwiches and entrees. The classic Corned Beef & Cabbage is only served on Thursdays, but they have other classics like a meat pie or shepherd's pie, along with steaks and salads. Along with typical appetizers like wings they have corned beef egg rolls! I tried to go for the meat pie but they were out, so I had the steak with a salad. My boyfriend had the wings. Everything was quite tasty, well cooked and flavored. The wings were nicely spiced without being mouth scorchers.

The wait staff was friendly and happy to help out with any questions.

Normally to get my "Irish Food Fix" (when we're not cooking it at home) we would go to O'Connors, with their huge menu, huge beer list and rich ambiance. This is definitely a smaller version, and not nearly as "well worn" (I mean that lovingly - I love the feel of a much-enjoyed Irish pub). This feels a bit cleaner and fresher. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course. It's just interesting to me. I'm sure part of it is becoming so used to the dark / smoky feel of an Irish pub which is of course illegal in modern anti-smoking days. I don't even smoke, either :) So that all being said, I am happy to go to Fiddler's Green and I appreciate their efforts to create a comforting Irish pub experience near Kelly Square.

Menu: Relatively small, but good selections
Wine List: Very small, they have Harp and Smitthy's on tap
Dress: Very casual
Staff: Very helpful and friendly
