The crane is THE most classic shape in origami, although this version of the posing is an alternate from the traditional one. Cranes stand for wishes, for long life, for hopes and dreams. There are many, many stories about Cranes in Japanese culture. Many weddings are celebrated with 1,000 folded cranes.
The nesting crane is a specific version of the crane symbology - this crane has found a mate and is settling down into a life. The outspread wings protect the nest area the perhaps could have eggs in it soon, or perhaps has baby chicks hidden beneath. I took the photo to emphasize those spread wings - the determination of the crane to protect the new life it has made for itself. Cranes are extremely loyal, and this crane will work hard to make sure its nest is well taken care of.
The paper is a light floral pattern, signs of spring and fertility. The woven mat on which it rests is a placemat that has brought pleasure into our meals on many occasions. It forms a suitable 'nest' on which the crane rests.
