Dragonball and Yu-Gi-Oh to Merge

In a move that is stunning fans around the world, Dragonball and Yu-Gi-Oh are going to merge together to form one gigantic storyline involving both anime worlds.

The new series, tentatively called YuGiBallZ, will follow the story of a group of characters who play card games in order to win dragonballs as prizes. The dragonballs confer power on those who hold them, so there are fierce competitions to gather as many balls as possible.

Many of the dragonball characters were named after types of food, so the Yu-Gi-Oh characters will take on "game names" that reflect this. Here are some of the proposed alternate names -

Yugi -> yogurt
Joey -> JuJuBe (a type of candy)
Tea -> Tea (luckily, she's already a drink)
Tristan -> Triscuit

The various creatures used in the card battles will have to increase the drama of their attacks to fit into the Dragonball universe scheme. Instead of roaring or stomping, as some of them do, they will now have incredibly long, drawn out 10 minute sequences involving a lot of shouting of "Kame .... Hame ... HAAAAAAA!" and then blinding lights of pure fury. If you're interested in just how this could look, be sure to load up Final Fantasy 8 on your PS2 and send, say, Shiva against a random enemy. Don't bother to hammer the X button to build up Shiva's power during the cinematic, just sit back and marvel in its glory.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, one of the side games in the recent Final Fantasy games were the card games. Many people spent more time playing cards than they did tracking down the latest Marlboro. So be sure to watch for special appearances from the various Final Fantasy characters - from Cid, Wedge and Biggs to Tidus and Auron - in the episodes of YuGiBallZ.
