Anime Video Creation - Planning your Project

The very first step in starting any project is the planning stage. Maybe you have a song you love - and an anime series you also love. You want to combine the two together.

If you've roamed the web, you've seen anime music videos that are amazingly powerful and well done. You've probably also seen anime music videos that are painfully horrendous to watch. With proper planning, you can make sure that your video is one that is really fun and enjoyable to see over and over again.

If you're a musician then you are all set - you can create music that is fully your own, and make a really unique video. If friends of yours are musicians, this works just as nicely. If you're planning on using a copyrighted song put out by another artist, keep in mind that what you are doing is violating copyright law, assuming you let others hear your creation. You are now distributing their music for free.

As far as the video clips go, if you have a video recorder and are making your own videos, you are all set. They can be amazingly well done with just a bit of thought and planning. Many video creators are hoping to use existing anime or movie footage, though. If you are just using little clips of video, it might be claimed that you are creating a fair use artistic statement and not intending to re-distribute the whole anime itself. It's like a newscast using a little snippet of a movie to talk about it. The newscast wouldn't play the entire movie - that would be illegal. Showing little snippets as part of a discussion is generally considered fine. Again, if you are doing this for your own personal use, that is generally fine. If you're selling this on the web, you could easily be in trouble.

In any case, once you decide on the music and the video source, lay out what you want to have shown at each point in the song. Which scenes best match up with the music. Note that some people try to put in *literal* matches, like having a scene with water when the song mentions the word "water". This gets old very quickly. It's really best to go for the feeling of the lyrics, not an exact interpretation. The more you go with the feeling and emotion, the more that the video is one people want to watch over and over again.

Once you have a storyboard done up of which scenes you need for which lyrical parts, it's time to start getting those scenes off your DVD.
