Kiki's Delivery Service

Kiki´s Delivery Service is a classic growing-up tale by Hayao Miyazaki. It tells of a 13 year old witch who is setting out on her own.

The tradition is for each witch, when she turns 13, to set out on her own for a year to get training on how to be independent. The witch is supposed to focus on her main talent and develop it. When a gorgeous full moon evening arrives, 13 year old Kiki decides this is the time, and sets out with her pet cat, Jiji.

She finds a gorgeous sea coast town, and although the city is huge, she decides to set up shop there. It's an old German-style city, with cobblestone streets. Apparently no witches are in town, which makes the situation perfect for her.

At first she has trouble adjusting to the big-city traffic, but she happens to be handy when a small errand needs to be run for a bakery owner. The bakery owner, Esona, invites her to stay in their spare bedroom. She starts by delivering bread for Esona and soon takes on a new customer.

Much of the story is about Kiki growing and learning during her stay in the city. At first, she worries about her plain witch's dress and boys treating her properly, and doesn't act very responsibly. Things get so bad that she completely loses her ability to fly, and feels that all hope is lost.

With the help of her friends, Kiki realizes that she has to find inspiration from within, and during a crisis she draws from all of her inner strength.

An inspiring tale for people of all ages!
