Final Fantasy Unlimited Episode 1 - Wonderland - Journey into the Darkness
The first episode of Final Fantasy Unlimited is called Wonderland - Journey into the Darkness. In this, the twins Ai and Yu ride the ghost train in search of their parents.
The series opens with "12 years before" when Dr. Joe Hayakawa and his pregnant wife, Mary, watch as 2 dragons are born from a blazing light in the sea. The monsters fight each other and the army that tries to defeat them.
We then flash to the "present" - where the city is mostly in ruins. The now 12 year old twins Ai (firstborn, female) and Yu (younger, male) are heading to the subway. Apparently if they catch a special subway train at a certain time on the full moon they can go to "Wonderland". Their parents were researchers who wrote a book about Wonderland, and the twins figure that this is where their parents have vanished to.
Sure enough, the Ghost Train arrives, with eyeballs on its sides. The twins are afraid but get on. Another girl runs on too - the teenage, big-breasted Lisa. Lisa tries to call in her location on a cell phone but the call doesn't go through. I guess the cell phone carrier's service area doesn't cover mysterious ghost trains.
The train finally "stops" by crashing nose-down into a long spiral staircase. The trio get out and climb up, coming out of a playground toy. They think this world looks "normal" but then realize everything - including the buildings - is made of plants. Ai goes into one door and sees a family of bugs eating some food.
Ai comes across a man caught up in a plant, but the man doesn't remember his name or where he is. A giant mushroom comes down to attack them all. Lisa uses a magic power - the "Kigen Arts" - to ward it off. The mushroom turns into a giant man-like creature with a single eye on a stalk, and Lisa can't defeat this.
The man stands up and reveals that he has a gun built into his arm, with his heart in its center. It takes 3 elements to form its attack. He puts in Mother Black, Fire Red and Burning Gold. This creates a phoenix who blows up the mushroom-creature.
