Boskone 2005 Review

Boskone is a Science Fiction - Fantasy convention held in Boston every February. The anime feature has been getting better each year!

For 2005, the anime room was very nicely located in a back corner of the festival space. In 2004 it had been in a noisy main area, which often made the audio track hard to hear. The only complaint this time might be that they placed it right next to the kids' room (maybe thinking 'kids watch cartoons'??) meaning that it was sometimes hard to hear the audio track over the shrieks of the 3 year olds.

There was a nice selection of items playing. You got episodes 1-4 of Samurai Champloo, episodes 1-4 of Chonor Crusade, episodes 1-4 of the Last Exile, plus some classics such as Kiki's Delivery Service, Metropolis and Titan AE.

Most of the features were subtitled - only a few were dubbed and these typically were the early morning kiddie offerings. One in fact - Project A-Ko - offered the commentary track by Yuji Moriyama.

I would have liked it better if they did the first TWO episodes of a number of series, so that we could have had more of a sampling of the variety of anime on the market. Also, I have to comment that showing Samurai Champloo at 11am as a 'kiddie fare' wasn't the wisest idea in the world. Some of the language and imagery in that particular anime isn't meant for the younger set.

Still, it was a good set of features, and the art show and sales area of Boskone is always interesting. The set of lectures and discussions offered really did have something for everyone. A few people were in costume, but nothing at all compared to the April Anime convention. Consider it a warm-up act!
