Berserk Episode 4 - Hand of God
In this flashback of a flashback, Guts remembers his childhood with a band of soldiers, and why he left their company.
First, Guts and Griffith have a fun water-fight and get to be friends.
Griffith shows Guts a special pendant he wears - a Beheilit. It was given to him by a fortune teller, and which will someday make him king. Guts scoffs to himself at this, saying that nobody that is just of "normal birth" could hope to be king.
Guts was born while his mother was dying, and he was picked up by the wife of Gambino, a soldier. Bad fortune came to Gambino's wife, and she died too. Gambino turned bitter at this, blaming Guts for his wife's death. He raised Guts, but was not kind to him at all. Guts tried his best to make Gambino proud, but Gambino and the other soldiers constantly put him down and picked on him.
Guts proved himself over and over on the battlefield as he grew, but each time Gambino simply took his reward money or ordered him to do menial tasks.
Finally one night Gambino, drunk, stumbled into Guts tent and tried to kill him, blaming him for all the trouble in his life. Guts tried to reason with Gambino and finally in self defense stabbed Gambino. The other soldiers, thinking Guts had killed Gambino outright, chased him down on horseback and shot him with arrows. When Guts tumbled into a chasm, the soldiers figured he had died.
We return to the "present" of Guts with the Band of the Hawk. Three years pass, as Guts and the band gain in reputation. The Band of the Hawk is fully in the employ of the kingdom of Midland now, helping in their fight against the enemies, the Tudas. Guts is one of the leaders of the band now, and they are feared as a force to be reckoned with.
