The Animatrix - A Detective Story
It's a classic film noir beginning, black and white, private investigator talking to himself. "Both my fridge and my bank account were empty." Someone calls - he's looking for a computer hacker named Trinity. It looks like the 30s with old style phones, but there are computer connections too.
The PI finds out that others have been seeking Trinity too - and the rest either died or went crazy. He talks about a Red Queen and chessboards. The PI starts on chat rooms and talks with a "Red Queen". The PI is told to jump the first of 6 brooks at 20:05. He realizes it's a clue about boarding a train and runs for it, barely getting on.
He's called Mr. Ash and is told he passed the test by Trinity. She then uses a device to suck the bug out of his eye. Three agents show up and they get into a gunfight. Unfortunately an agent tries to take over his body and she has to shoot him. He apologizes for getting her involved in the trap. She says there's a difference between a test and a choice - and that he could have handled the choice. She then jumps out the window to safety.
We're back to him sitting with the gun from the beginning scene - pointing it at the agents. It fades out - undoubtedly he dies.
