The Animatrix - World Record
In World Record, a cel-shaded grey and brown story, the narrator explains that only the most exceptional become "aware" enough to escape the Matrix. Segue to a star runner, Dan, who breaks a world record but is shown to have taken drugs to get that score. Dan tells a reporter that it feels like you're in Zero G to go that fast and that he wants to do it again.
Against advice from his coach, the runner goes out again to show he can do it on his own. He pushes himself too hard, and his body starts to fail. Agents sense that he's in the Zone and go onto the track to take him out. But suddenly Dan does indeed see the numbers and takes up in his pod.
Dan's grabbed and electrocuted, and sent back into the Matrix. He does 8.72 seconds - a new world record - but his body collapses from the stress. The next time you see Dan, he's in a wheelchair being pushed by a talkative blonde nurse. "He will never run again, he will never walk again," reports an agent.
