The Animatrix - Program

Being a huge fan of feudal Japan, I loved the look of this short. It was very much like the woodblock prints done of samurai of the 1600s and 1700s.

The main character of this story is a woman, who stays unnamed. She is a long white-haired samurai warrior who first takes on a group of black-armored samurai attackers with great ease. A man comes up in samurai armor and says that he'd like to duel her. She calls him "Duo" and agrees.

As they duel, Duo asks her if she regrets taking the red pill. Then he admits he is going to go back fully into the Matrix. That Zion is doomed and only in the Matrix will they know peace and happiness. He says, "I took the red pill because I wanted to know the truth. But I don't care about the truth any more."

She resists, saying they can't go back, and that she wouldn't want to - she'd rather know the truth and deal with reality. But Duo insists that it's better to live in comfort even if it's fake. He tells her that he has already alerted the machines to their presence and either they go now or die. She still refuses.

He then says that he'll have to kill her if she won't go with him, and begins a fierce onslaught. She manages to stop him, break his sword, and use the tip of his sword to kill him. As he dies, he says he loves her, and she cries against him.

Suddenly she's pulled out of the program and told she "passed" - that this was just a training program, it wasn't real, and she passed on all counts. Furious, she slugs the guy who ran the training and stalks out.
