Genealogy in a LDS Family Research Center

The Mormons, also known as the Latter Day Saints or LDS, have created family research centers around the US that any genealogist can visit and perform research in.

The main website run by the LDS organization is FamilySearch.org. The website links to great information on how to get started with research in the LDS archives, how to submit your own information to be included in their files, and where local branches of the LDS archives can be found.

In essence, if you go to your local LDS location, you can then request that any microfilm or information from the central location in Utah be sent out to you. You can review it in person at your location and then have it sent back to the HQ in Utah when you are done.

The main Utah location was founded in 1894, and has 2,000 visitors every day for genealogy and tourism reasons. Their files contain almost 37 million individuals, with more being added in daily. The information they have is from around the globe, covering 110 different countries.

If you're interested in genealogy, visiting the LDS center nearest you - and perhaps planning a trip out to their central Utah location - should definitely be on your list of things to do!
