The Great Seed Experiment: Seeds
During the Great Seed Experiment, I used 5 types of seed to tempt my feathered friends.
Here are the seeds I used.
 | Black Oiled Sunflower Seed |
Black Oiled Sunflower Seed is very commonly used in birding, because just about every bird enjoys it. However, the shells from the seeds make an INCREDIBLE mess, and squirrels just love these. Younger birds can have trouble getting into the tough shells.
 | Shelled Seed |
This is great because it's just the inside of the seed. No mess from all the shells, no tough work for the birds. It may seem to cost more if you look at the weight vs the weight of the BOSS, but remember, the weight of the BOSS is mostly the shell!
 | Mixed Seed |
Just what the name says, a random mix of seed, including some sunflower seeds. The birds usually pick out the sunflower seeds when you watch them :) They might eat the rest. It's pretty cheap, though.

Also called niger seed, these little black seeds are a favorite of finches of all sizes.
 | Cracked Corn |
Cracked Corn is of course a classic. Just think of the Wizard of Oz and the scarecrow put up to keep the birds away from the corn.
I also had out a dish of water, to keep the birds from getting thirsty. Water is KEY for your birds, because birds get dehydrated very easily. You should try to freshen it daily. Just like humans, birds don't like grungy water.
