Mountain Bluebird Photos and Info

The mountain bluebird is the state bird of both Idaho and Nevada. The bluebird is a traditional symbol of hope and happiness. There are only three bluebirds in the US - the mountain bluebird, the eastern bluebird and the western bluebird. All three are types of thrush, as is the Robin.

Mountain bluebirds live in the mountains of the western US and Canada, sharing territory with the western bluebird. The male mountain bluebird is all blue, where the western bluebird male has a brownish breast and black. Both tend to live in small flocks and live off of insects and berries.

Bluebird populations were in trouble in the early 1900s as settlers chopped down trees and forests. In the 50s and 60s a concerted effort to build nestboxes for them across the US helped recover the bluebird populations.
