Anhinga Nest and Chick Photos

May is the best time of year to visit the Everglades. It's the time of year for nests and baby chicks!

These photos were taken on May 6, 2004 from the tower on the Shark Trough tram tour. You could literally stand on the curling walkway of the tower and look across into the nest.

The ranger told us later that anhingas are full size within 2 weeks of birth! They have to grow quickly to stay out of the maws of the hundreds of gators that lurk nearby. Just below this nest was a water area with at least 10 gators cruising around. A helpless chick would make an easy meal for a gator!

I think the chick looks very swan-like in this first photo :)
