New Years Resolutions for Birders

What resolutions have you made to enhance your birding enjoyment? Here are some suggestions to expand the fun you have with birding!

Expand your Birding List
One of the simplest ways to keep track of what you've done in birding and to see new things is to maintain a birding list. Make a target for the number of new birds you'd like to add to your list.

Complete a Category List
There are thousands of lists on the web that you can work on completing. You can try to see all 50 US state birds. You can aim for all common birds in your own location. You can go for all birds in your favorite type, like finches or hawks. Whatever your interest, there's a list to work with.

Take a Trip
There are many places in the world that are famous for their birding. These include locations such as Costa Rica, Alaska, the Everglades and more. Look around now for great travel deals, and set up a "travel fare watch" at one of the big travel websites. Their system will mail you when fares drop low between your local airport and your destination. When they do, grab a ticket and go!

Enhance your Back Yard
While searching out birds can be fun, don't forget about your local feathered friends! Put out another feeder, put up some new houses, plant some trees or bushes to bring in more variety. Add a water fountain or a pond.

Post your Photos
One of the great benefits of the web is that it helps birders learn more about birds by visiting each others web pages. We can see lots of photos of a type of bird before we go to that bird's home area to try to spot it. That makes spotting it and understanding its life much easier. Add to the web knowledge by posting your own photos and putting up notes about the birds of your area, that you know and love!
