Parakeet Field of Vision - Sideways Eyes

Because keets' eyes are so far apart from each other, they often "point" an eye at an object to see it. You or I would point our nose at the object to see that object with both eyes. A keet would point the "side of her head" (i.e. one of her eyes) at the object to really focus on it.

See how far the eyes are from each other? They can't really see "forward". Each one takes care of one side of the parakeet. The left eye knows what's going on over in the left side of the room, and the right eye knows what's going on in the right side of the room.

For example, if a feather falls from my keet cage down to the ground, I will see all four keets turn their heads sideways and point one of their eyes at that feather as it falls down, down, down. It's really cute :)

Here's a video of me walking around Pinto. You can see how Pinto adjusts her head position as I move, so that one of her eyes is always pointing straight at me.
