Kaytee Forti-Diet Egg-Cite Seed
Protein is definitely important for any parakeet. Parakeets cannot live on just seed alone! It causes malnutrition, just like a human would get sick if they ate only white bread all day every day. With Forti-Diet Egg-Cite they add in egg crumbles for natural protein. In fact the mix ends up being 14% protein. It is of course primarily seed. The mix ingredient list begins with canary grass seed, white millet, oat groats, dried whole egg, red millet, ground wheat, flax seed, corn gluten meal and on it goes. As you can see, egg is right up there with the other items. You might think it is odd to feed eggs to parakeets - but really, this is a healthy part of a keet diet. I suppose it's like fish eating fish. It's just the way things go.
The egg in this are just little roundish pellet like things. The keets eat them while they're eating through the seeds. The bag calls them "crumbles".
I do have a complaint that the bag is not easy to re-seal. It does have a zip-lock in it but I don't find it easy to use. That being said, I always like to keep my seed in tupperware to make sure no bugs get into it, and so it stays fresh. Keets are very sensitive about fresh food! So it really doesn't matter in that sense what the original bag looked like. I highly recommend you get some sort of easy to use tupperware container for your keet foods, to keep them nice and fresh once the bag is opened.
My keets took to this food easily, and enjoyed it. Recommended.
