How does Mary have her mother's tambourine? Wouldn't it have burned up in the village fire?
I had a longer version of the story where Mary's mother tucks her into the grain bin for safety along with the tambourine, as sort of a "security blanket". It's something that Mary would cling to in order to feel comforted. In the process of trimming down the story to its important scenes, that got polished out. But Mary had the tambourine with her during the burning of her village.
