Thu - Exploring St Albans
Da Vinci Code Trip - London, Paris, Scotland
The plane arrived in Heathrow Airport, England just after dawn. Luckily, the immigration lines were maybe 10 minutes in length, and they sent me right through with very little questions. By the time I got to the luggage area, my bag was right there and I headed out the exit. There was Peter waiting for me, with a name-sign and everything!! Our adventure was about to begin.
We headed out to the car and I tried to get in the "passenger side" before I realized that the car was, of course, backwards :) He drove us north; we zipped along the highway (driving on the left of course) until we get to St Albans. The town is GORGEOUS and ancient. It was one of the 3 original Roman towns, and then when the first martyr of England - St. Albans - had his body put into a shrine here, it became a destination for pilgrims. There are still a ton of lovely old buildings here, including of course the Cathedral that holds the saint's bones. Here are some photos I took as we drove through town.

I was fascinated by the chimneys having multiple little pipes in them. In the US, a chimney is simply a straight rectangle up, without any inner tubing.

The next two pictures are of the Comfort Inn right on the main street in town. This used to be owned by the Ryder company, creators of the Ryder Cup in Golf. This is where I stayed.

This next image is of a traditional carriagehouse "underpass". The carriagehouse would have a sheltered driveway next to it, where carriages could pull up and let their passengers off without getting rained on.

We went out to the suburbs where Peter lives, where the homes are a bit newer. Notice the lack of chimneys!
