LISA & BOB:
Michigan and Niagara Winery Travelogue
Thursday, June 3
I got home from work nice and early at 6pm, but Bob wasn't home until a few hours later, so our start was late. We left the house around 9:30pm, and took wendy, quiet roads out to Sturbridge. We then turned south and headed down 84 though the brightly-starred night. The road was smooth and easy, and the night sky was gorgeous. Despite construction, ridged roads and other traffic obstacles, we enjoyed the hawks and the music of the many mini-disks we'd prepared. We pulled into Bob's mom's house in Ossining NY around 12:30pm and climbed into bed.
Friday, June 4
On Friday, we put aside our earlier plan of leaving before 8am since we'd gotten in so late the night before. Instead, we rested up, hanging out for a short while, and eventually leaving the house around 10am. We went across the Tappanzee Bridge, which was quite breathtaking, and headed down through New Jersey. This Garden State was mostly rock mining and such along the highway, although a fair number of hawks were out in the gorgeous sunshine. The road was smooth, the air fresh, and again the mini-disks passed the time quickly.
Down into Pennsylvania, the Long State. The long, rolling hills were beautiful, as were the farms nestled into the valleys and the bridges across rivers and chasms. We saw very bright red-winged blackbirds, more hawks, even herons. We had the satisfaction of seeing a speeding driver hauled over by the cops. Late in the afternoon we rolled into Ohio, where we grabbed some glasses for Bob to fend off the setting sun. The road turned northwards, and the hills settled down into flattish farmland and car plants. Soon, past a brightly-lit stadium, we entered Michigan.
The land grew very flat here. Darkness settled onto the land, and small roads had either farmland or short trees on either side. We'd been warned quite a bit about deer, so I watched carefully for gleaming eyes. Indeed, as we approached the Manchester region, I did see a deer at the side of the road. We passed the Manchester town twice (with its River Raisin), and stopped to call at an antique store. Turns out we were close, but didn't know about a turn. At 12:30, we arrived, triumphantly, at their house.
